BOSTON, Sept. 9, 2026 — Fidelity Investments has opened its new headquarters at Commonwealth Pier in Boston’s Seaport district as thousands of employees return to the office five days a week, marking a major change in the company’s workplace policy.
The 840,000-square-foot property occupies a century-old waterfront structure that has undergone a six-year renovation led by Pembroke, Fidelity’s real estate arm. The headquarters combines preserved industrial architecture with new offices, courtyards, restaurants, retail space and public amenities.
Preserving Commonwealth Pier’s History
Commonwealth Pier dates to 1913 and was originally built for freight trains and steamships. The renovated property retains exposed brick and stonework, steel beams and refurbished wooden roof decking from the original structure.
The property now includes public-facing retail areas, restaurants, an extended Harbor Walk and a dedicated space for the Museum of American Finance. The renovation also introduced glass facades and four interior courtyards, along with a fifth outdoor courtyard open to the public.
Inside Fidelity’s New Headquarters
The new workplace features four interior courtyards that allow more daylight into the building, along with mini-cafes distributed throughout the property. The office layout gives greater space to shared areas and communal spaces rather than traditional cubicles.
The new headquarters is part of Fidelity’s larger Seaport operations, which include other office locations. About 3,200 employees are expected to report to the Commonwealth Pier location, while Fidelity will retain its existing headquarters at 245 Summer St. and continue using additional space in the Seaport district.

Five Days in the Office
The headquarters opening coincides with Fidelity’s new five-day office requirement for most Boston employees. Previously, many employees were expected to work in the office for two full weeks out of every four, or about 10 days per month.
The new schedule requires employees to report to the office each week. Customer support phone employees are an exception and will continue with a reduced in-office schedule. Fidelity has also introduced the five-day requirement at selected locations outside Boston.
A Major Investment in Boston
Fidelity has not disclosed the cost of the Commonwealth Pier renovation. Projects of this scale can run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, according to reporting on the headquarters opening.
The headquarters represents a significant investment in Fidelity’s Boston footprint at a time when the company is requiring more employees to work in person. By retaining 245 Summer St. alongside the renovated waterfront property, Fidelity will have additional office capacity as its workforce returns to more frequent in-person work.
